Welding Rods & Welding Electrodes at Engweld
Welding rods and electrodes are used in the arc welding process also known as MMA welding and stick welding.
An electrode is essentially a coated metal wire. It should generally be made out of materials similar in nature and composition to the metal being welded, and there are a variety of factors that go into selecting the right electrode for your particular project, whether a positional electrode or regular.
While Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or ‘stick’ electrodes are consumable and become a part of the weld, other electrodes such as those used in TIG welding are non-consumable, meaning they do not melt and stay separate from the weld, in these circumstances the use of a welding rod is required.
We offer a wide range of welding electrodes including mild steel (rutile), low hydrogen (basic), stainless steel, repair & maintenance and cellulosic in a variety of sizes from 1.6 - 5.0mm for a broad range of welding applications. Brands we work with include Bohler, ESAB, Lincoln Electric, and Oerlikon.
Selection of the right welding electrode is essential when it comes to the strength of the weld, bead quality, minimising splatter and clean-up. Read our guide below which explains what all the different types of welding rods are and what you might use them for, including low hydrogen and stainless steel welding rods, plus arc welding rods suitable for welding mild steel, dissimilar steels and cast iron.
Engweld also stocks welding electrode quivers and ovens for storing and warming electrodes and welding rods to achieve optimum performance.
