Fluteless taps, also known as thread forming taps or cold-forming taps, are a type of cutting tools used to create threads without removing material or chip removal. They are ideal for applications where the material being threaded is brittle or prone to cracking.
Fluteless taps rely on a unique geometry to deform the material into the desired thread shape. One advantage of fluteless taps is that they can produce threads faster and with less tool wear than traditional taps, making them suitable for high-volume production runs.
Fluteless taps have a series of lobes or teeth around the circumference of the tap that gradually increase in size. As the tap is rotated and pushed into the material, the lobes or teeth compress the material and force it to flow around the tap, creating threads without removing any material. So the fluteless taps process works by deforming material rather than cutting it.
Processes using fluteless tap require precise control of the tapping process, as they can easily deform the material too much or too little, resulting in weak or misaligned threads. You may also need to consider that fluteless taps require more force to tap than traditional taps.
