Screwdrivers
Screwdrivers are hand tools used to tighten or loosen screws. They consist of an easy-to-grip handle and a shaft with a shaped tip that fits into the head of a screw. A screwdriver set includes various different types of screwdrivers, each with a differently shaped tip to fit into different types of screw heads.
There are screws with different types of screw heads, so you need a matching screwdriver for them. Most screwdriver sets include the most common shapes.
- Flathead screwdrivers: these have a flat and straight tip designed to fit into a slotted screw head.
- Phillips screwdrivers: have a cross-shaped tip designed to fit into a Phillips screw head.
- Pozidriv screwdrivers: have a similar cross-shaped tip like Phillips screw but with additional smaller cross lines. The additional cross lines offer a more secure grip on the screw head.
- Torx screwdrivers: have a six-pointed star-shaped tip that fits into a Torx screw head.
- Hex screwdrivers: have a hexagonal tip that fits into a hex screw head.
- Robertson screwdrivers: have a square-shaped tip that fits into a Robertson screw head.
- Tri-win screwdrivers: have a three-pointed tip that fits into a tri-wing screw head.
- Security screwdrivers: have a specialised tip that is designed to fit into screws with unique security features, such as tamper-proof or pin-in screws.
Screwdriver shafts including tips are typically made of steel or other durable materials like titanium and chrome vanadium. The handles are often made of plastic or rubber to provide a comfortable grip and help insulate the user from electrical shocks.
