Dedicated MIG Welding Gloves

Dedicated MIG Welding gloves are vital for all your MIG Welding projects. As MIG welding generates intense heat, sparks and UV Radiations, safety is a paramount concern. Only using Thermal work gloves or rigger gloves for instance is not enough to properly protect you against all the hazards during the welding process.

TIG Welding Gloves are not even recommended in this situation. Even if they are thinner and will allow more control during the welding process, their heat protection is not strong enough to handle the high temperatures generated by MIG Welding.

Choosing good quality MIG Welding Gloves will enhance your safety and improve your welding performance.

What are the key features to look for when choosing your MIG Welding Gloves

There are several key features to look for when choosing your next pair of MIG welding gloves. Here are a breakdown of the main ones:

  • Superior heat resistance: There are different types of leather that can be used to craft the MIG Welding gloves, mainly Cowhide leather or cow split leather. But both will have a superior resistance to heat.
  • Optimal Dexterity and Feel: More than just the choice of the leather, the design and the overall thickness of the leather will allow for good control of the welding torch and filler wire. Some MIG welding gloves are designed with ergonomic features or pre-curved fingers.
  • Robust Durability: Choosing gloves with a strong abrasive resistance can be very important if you are working on a daily basis with them. Some MIG welding gloves are kevlar stitched to enhance durability or palm patches. This is the case of the RADNOR™ Mig Welding Gloves 14".
  • Effective Spark and Spatter Protection: MIG welding gloves constructed with proper leather material are resistant against hot sparks and molten metal.
  • Extended Cuff (Gauntlet) for Added Protection: Longer cuffs protect the wrists and forearms from heat, sparks, and UV exposure, especially during extended welding sessions.
  • Comfort for Prolonged Use: Some MIG welding gloves are designed with features that contribute to comfort, such as soft linings or breathable leather in certain areas.

Understanding Leather Types for MIG Welding:

Cowhide leather and cow split leather are often used to create MIG welding gloves. These two types of leather are both derived from cow hides, but differ in their origin. Cowhide leather is an excellent balance of durability and heat resistance. But by being thicker than split leather, its dexterity is not as good as split leather. Cow split leather is generally thinner, made from the lower layers of the hide after the top grain has been removed. This enhances the dexterity while not decreasing its heat protection. These two leather types, alongside kevlar stitching, create strong welding gloves with high dexterity.

Choosing the Right MIG Welding Gloves

  • Consider the Level of Heat Exposure: If you are working with high-amperage welding or prolonged exposure, thicker, more heat-resistant gloves are necessary. A good example of high heat resistant gloves is the Esab M3050 Mig Welding Gloves.
  • Assess Dexterity Requirements: Depending on your preferences and the type of project you are working on you’ll need to find the level of fine motor control required for the task.
  • Evaluate Cuff Length Preference: The choice between standard and gauntlet cuff is important. In some situations where there are lots of sparks welding gauntlets are going to be a must have. With their long cuffs, the Parweld Panther Black Mig Gauntlet is a reference.
  • Check for Reinforcement in High-Wear Areas: Look for added leather in palms and fingers for increased durability.
  • Ensure a Proper Fit: MIG welding gloves should be snug enough for good control but not too tight to restrict movement or cause discomfort.
