We stock plasma cutting brands such as ESAB, Hypertherm & Lincoln Electric.

What is Plasma Cutting?

Plasma occurs when additional energy is added to a gas, at which point the molecules within the gas begin to move faster and therefore collide with greater force. Ions are formed as atoms begin to separate from their electron outer shell, which forms ions. As more and more atoms turn to ions, the gas reaches a critical point where the atoms taking in free electrons is balanced with the number of atoms losing electrons. Now, the ionised gas becomes a plasma.

This thermal-based fabrication process can be used to cut through a range of metals, using a constricted plasma arc.

The primary plasma arc cutting process includes the following phases:

  • Pilot arc initiation
  • Main arc generation
  • Localised heating and melting
  • Material ejection
  • Arc movement

What Plasma Cutting Equipment do you need?

Plasma cutting equipment is generally fairly small in size, and to begin plasma cutting you will need the following:

  • A plasma cutting torch, large units will need to be water cooled while smaller units can be air cooled.
  • An electrode tip, typically copper or tungsten.
  • A nozzle insulator, to go between the tip of the electrode and the tip of the nozzle.
  • A control unit.
  • A power supply.
  • At least one cutting gas, some applications may require more than one.
  • A supply of clean water for cooling.
  • A regulator assembly that can control and regulate the gas used.
