Magnetic drills or mag drills are portable drilling machines designed to be used on metal surfaces. They are powerful and provide the convenience and stability of a drill press. Magnetic drills and cutters feature a strong electromagnetic base which allows them to be attached to metal surfaces and the drill bit to bore through the material with speed, accuracy, and precision.

A vacuum-powered clamping device, also known as Vac Pad, can be used to secure a magnetic drill to a non-ferrous material, providing the ability to drill on non-magnetic, curved, or thin surfaces. The Vac Pad holds the drill in place securely by creating a strong vacuum between the pad and the surface allowing the drill to be used on materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, and thin carbon steel plates. 

Magnetic drills and cutters can be found in various applications from construction to metal fabrication, and other industries where metalworking is required. One of the advantages of mag drills is that they eliminate the need for clamps or other forms of securing the material being drilled. This makes the process more convenient for the operator as it eliminates the risk of materials moving during the drilling process. 

There are several precautions to take before using magnetic drills and cutters. 

• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. 
• Make sure the mag drill is properly grounded
• Clean the surface and make sure there are no chips or other debris resting beneath the magnet or on the surface. 
• Remove any jewellery before operation a magnetic drill 
• You must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection and safety specs to protect your eyes.
