Flashback arrestors are safety devices used in gas welding and cutting to prevent flame from travelling back into the gas supply hoses which could cause safety hazards.
A flashback arrestor works by using a flame arrestor element to stop a flame from moving backwards through the hose and back into the gas supply.
Flashback arrestors are installed near the point where the gas supply enters the torch or cutting device. The arrestor element is designed to thermally fuse and seal in the event of a flame, and prevent the flame from reaching the gas supply.
The British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) Code of Practice 7 (CP7) is a set of guidelines for the safe handling, storage, transportation, and use of gas cylinders, including selection, installation and maintenance of cylinder storage areas. The safe use of Individual Portable or Mobile Cylinder Gas Supply Equipment obligates the duty holder to check that regulators and flashback arrestors are checked annually, dependent on use. It may in some circumstances, need to be more frequent, and must be replaced by the manufacturer’s recommended replacement date. For more information on CP7 - click here.
