Engineer’s square, also known as Machinist square, is a measuring equipment used to accurately check and mark angles, or the squareness of straight edges and lines. They are widely used in many industries including engineering and metalworking applications.
They are normally in the L shape and form a perfect 90-degree right angle allowing the user to test all manner of edges, planes, and corners on a workpiece. Engineer’s squares are typically made from high-grade metal to provide strength and durability.
Machinist Squares, Try Squares, and Engineer’s Squares may look very similar to each other but they have slight differences. Machinist Squares are normally made from hardened tool steel and try squares have the stock made out of either wood or plastic while the blade is metallic. Engineers squares are typically made of metal like alloy steel, with blades and stock made from the same material.
Machinist squares were popular for metalworking tasks, while try squares are mostly used in woodwork. However, engineer squares have now become widely preferred for all types of precision angle measurement across many industries, jobs, and projects.
Engweld also stocks Combination Squares which are versatile and multi-purpose measuring and marking tools. They are also known as Adjustable Squares and consist of a rule with one or more interchangeable heads that can be attached to it.
