Tungsten Electrodes at Engweld

Arc welding process with Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) is done with Tungsten electrodes. In this welding process the inert gas protects the tungsten electrode, arc and weld puddle from atmospheric contamination. TIG welding with Tungsten electrodes is preferred when finely crafted quality weld with precision is required, producing an extremely stable arc.

You may have noticed that Tungsten electrodes are colour coded and that is because there is an extensive range of TIG welding electrodes. Apart from the green pure tungsten welding electrodes, the rest are made with oxidic additives such as zirconium oxide, lathanum oxide, cerium oxide or thorium oxide. There are also some other ones that contain oxidic additives with rare earths.

Choosing The Right Type Of Tungsten Electrode

You will have to choose the right tungsten electrode depending on your welding task. See our Guide to Tungsten Electrodes which explains the different different types of tungsten electrodes, their effect and properties, and what colour they are marked.

There are several different factors to look when choosing the tungsten electrode:

  • Tungsten electrode type (eg. thoriated tungsten, ceriated tungsten
  • Electrode diameter
  • Grinding quality and roughness of the electrode
  • Tip geometry of the TIG welding electrode
  • Whether you're using an AC welding machine or DC TIG welding machine

To get you started with TIG welding, you will require a TIG welder machine, TIG torch and Tungsten electrodes and Engweld has it all. See our full range of TIG Welders and TIG Torches from renowned brands.
