Taps and Dies - Threading Tools
Taps and dies are very simple and easy-to-use tools. The tap is placed in a pre-drilled hole and turned using a tap wrench. As the tap rotates, it cuts threads into the inside of the hole. To create external threads, the die tool is used and placed onto the outside of the object being threaded, and a die handle is used to turn the die. As the die rotates, it cuts threads onto the object’s surface.
Engweld stocks taps and dies in various sizes designed to cut threads of specific pitches and diameters.
You must use the right taps and dies and be familiar with the equipment and techniques involved in order to achieve optimal results. You can buy individual flutes and dies or buy sets which contain different types, sizes, and diameters.
There are a number of important factors to consider when using taps and dies including:
Tap/Die Size and Pitch: choose the correct size and pitch of the tap or die to match the size and pitch of the hole or rod being threaded.
Material: use appropriate taps and dies for the material being threaded. Harder materials may require specialised taps and dies that can withstand the high cutting forces required.
Lubrication: to reduce friction and heat buildup during the threading process, ensure adequate lubrication. Appropriate lubrication can also prolong the life of the tap and die.
Cutting speed and pressure: To avoid damage and ensure clean and price cut, use appropriate cutting speed and pressure depending on the material being threaded.
Alignment: to ensure a successful thread-cutting process, alignment is critical when using taps and dies. The tap or die must be held perpendicular to the workpiece to avoid cross-threading or other damage.
Engweld also stocks Fluteless Taps, Spiral Flute Taps, and Spiral Point Taps.
