Non-woven abrasives are a type of abrasive material that is made by bonding together synthetic fibres with abrasive particles. The fibre is typically nylon or another synthetic material. Non-woven finishing products can be in the form of belts, discs, pads, flap wheels and flap discs to fit a variety of power tools.
Unlike other abrasives, non-woven abrasives are not made from a single layer of abrasive materials. Instead, they are made by layering different types of synthetic fibres, each with a specific purpose, and bonding them together with a resin or adhesive.
One benefit of non-woven abrasives is that it can compress like a sponge or a spring, so you can control the rate of cut. The flexible nature of non-woven abrasives allows them to conform to the surface being worked on without gouging, scratching, or causing other grinding defects. For the same reason, non-woven abrasives are not a suitable choice for heavy material removal.
There are different grades for abrasives and the 4 common ones are:
It is important to note that the actual size range of abrasive particles for each grade may vary depending on the material being worked on and the specific application.
