What is TIG Welding?

TIG welding or Tungsten Inert Gas welding is a form of arc welding, which is a welding process that produces the weld using a non-consumable electrode. Rather than using slag to protect the weld pool from oxidation and contamination, an inert gas, typically argon, is pumped down the shaft of the welding tool, which acts as a shield around the weld pool.

What is TIG Welding used for?

Having shot to fame around the 1940’s for successfully joining aluminum and magnesium, TIG Welding has become a widely used method for welding, and welding aluminum in particular. Due to the precise control the welder has, burn throughs are easily avoided. For this reason, TIG welding is a particularly effective method for welding materials 3mm in thickness, or light gauge metals, and can be used to weld almost all metals and metal alloys. It is an effective method for welding metals that the traditional welding process may struggle with. Typically used to weld stainless steel and nonferrous metals, TIG welding can be used to weld virtually all types of metals, with the exception of zinc and its alloys due to their low boiling point, this however can be overcome.
