Magnetic drill machines for maximum efficiency and precision

What is a magnetic drill machine?

A magnetic drill machine, also known as a magnetic base drill, is a specialised portable drilling tool designed to create precise and clean holes in metals. They are commonly used in the metalworking industry where efficiency and precision are crucial. Magnetic drill machines are portable and provide exceptional stability making them a popular tool for various applications including construction, manufacturing, and metal fabrication.

How does a magnetic drill machine work?

A portable magnetic drilling machine has a powerful magnetic base which is the foundation of the drill machine. The magnetic base contains powerful electromagnets that help clamp and lock the machine firmly to the workpiece, providing stability during the drilling process. This mechanism allows the machine to be used in various angles including horizontal, vertical, and overhead.

A magnetic drill machine will have a control panel located on the machine featuring buttons or switches to control various functions such as power, speed adjustments, and directional rotational.

Portable magnetic drill machines use cutting tools such as broaching cutters, countersinks, and magnetic twist drills. The cutting tools are usually made of high-speed steel (HSS) or tungsten carbide tipped (TCT).

The cutting tool is held by the arbor or drill chuck which secures the cutting tools in place and provides the necessary rotational motion. The arbor is designed to fit into the spindle of the magnetic drill machine and is secured using a chuck or a similar mechanism. Once the arbor is securely attached to the drill machine, the cutting tool can be inserted into the arbor and tightened using the chuck.

The drill machine is typically powered by an electric motor that powers the rotation of the arbor, which subsequently rotates the cutting tool, allowing it to drill or cut through various materials. The motor is connected to a gearbox that controls the rotational speed and torque output. The gearbox allows the operator to adjust the speed for different drilling requirements.

How to choose the right magnetic drill machine?

There are many different magnetic drill machines in the market to choose from. Here are some factors to consider that can help you narrow down your choice and choose the right one.

  • Power and performance: assess your intended applications to find a machine that offers sufficient power, rotational speed, and cutting capacity.
  • Cutting capacity: consider the maximum cutting diameter and depth that the machine can handle. Choose a machine that accommodates the size and thickness of the materials you intend to work with.
  • Versatility and flexibility: consider the machine’s adaptability to different drilling situations. Look for features such as adjustable drilling angles, swivel base, and compatibility with various cutting tools. This will allow you to use the machine for a range of drilling tasks.
  • Safety features: machines with safety mechanisms can help prevent accidents and protect the operator during use. Look for a magnetic drilling machine with safety features such as a magnetic force indicator, overload protection, stable base design, and huddle motor cable for added protection. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions in the manual.
  • Durability: a magnetic drill machine made from high-quality materials should be able to withstand rigorous use. For example, JEI MAGBEAST range of magnetic drilling machines incorporate heavy-duty design and build to ensure maximum performance.
  • Machines with internal coolant reservoirs can ensure maximum cutter life.
  • Compact size and weight: for portability and ease of use.

Magnetic Drill Machines Range

MiniBeast is JEI’s flagship and best-seller magnetic drilling machine. It is versatile, compact, and portable making it ideal for on-site or workshop use. MiniBeast magnetic drill machine is lightweight and powerful with a core drilling capacity of up to 35mm, and with a twist drill it can drill up to 12mm.

For high-production environments, it may be worth investing in an automatic magnetic drilling machine such as the MiniBeast Auto. It includes all the features of a standard MiniBeast. MiniBeast Auto can drill more in less time with easier operation and simple electronic controls.

If you will be working in remote areas or where there is no power source then go for MiniBeast Cordless, a battery-operated compact magnetic drill machine. JEI MiniBeast Cordless is fully compatible with CAS battery units and capable of drilling holes with a diameter of up to 36mm with annular cutters. With twist drills, the machine can drill holes with a diameter of up to 12mm.

MiniBeast Curve magnetic drill machine is your choice for drilling pipes, convex and concave surfaces. It is equipped with four permanent magnet bases and does not require any additional clamping attachments. JEI curve is designed to hold onto pipes with an outside radius of ØR300 mm and an inside radius of ØR500 mm.

If your application requires drilling in space-restricted areas, then use a MiniBeast LP35+ magnetic drill machine which has an ultra-low fixed working height. It is a premium low-profile drilling machine with a height of only 176mm but still powerful enough to drill holes with a diameter of up to 35mm with annular cutters.

Another choice for drilling in restricted spaces is the MiniBeast RT, a compact magnetic drilling machine. It uses a ratchet handle system allowing the machine to operate in more restricted spaces.

The MagBeast HM range is the premium range of magnetic drilling machines made in the UK. There is the MagBeast HM40 equipped with a 1100w motor power offering a cutter capacity of up to 40mm. MagBeast HM100 is for heavy-duty with a 1700w motor power and cutter capacity of up to 100mm.

How to use a magnetic drill on non-ferrous metals?

You can use your magnetic drill machine to drill on non-magnetic, curved, or thin surfaces by using a Vac Pad. They require compressed air pressure (maximum 120 PSI), so you will need an air compressor

There are two sizes including Vac Pad Standard (200mm x 135mm) and Vac Pad Large (300mm x 250mm) to cover the complete JEI range of magnetic drilling machines.
