Gas Flowmeters for MIG & TIG Use

Gas flowmeters are devices that measure the flow rate of a gas. They are used to monitor and control the flow of gases in various industrial and commercial applications. In MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding processes, gas flowmeters play a crucial role in controlling the flow of shielding gas to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

Gas flowmeters are a critical component in welding as they help ensure the correct amount of gas is being used, which can impact safety, efficiency, and cost. They provide the welder with control over the rate of gas flow, allowing for adjustments based on factors like welding material, thickness, and welding position.

Engweld stocks different types of gas flowmeters and each type of gas flowmeter is designed to work with specific types of gases and flow ranges. It is therefore important to choose the correct type of flowmeter for the specific application.

Gas flowmeters in MIG welding

Gas flowmeter for MIG welding applications can be fitted to the outlet of an argon-mix or CO2 gas regulator. In MIG welding, a gas flowmeter regulates the flow of shielding gas, typically a mix of argon and carbon dioxide or other inert gases. The shielding gas creates a protective atmosphere around the weld pool, preventing oxidation and ensuring a clean- high-quality weld.

Gas flowmeters for TIG welding

Gas flowmeters for TIG welding are designed to control the flow of pure argon or other inert gases. The flowmeter is fitted to the outlet of an argon MIG gas regulator and increases the accuracy of gas flow control. The inert gas shields the tungsten electrode and the weld pool from atmospheric contamination, ensuring precise and clean welds.

Torch Gas Flowmeters

Torch gas flowmeter, also known as torch regulator, is used to accurately measure and set the gas flow rate through the gas nozzle of a MIG/TIG welding torch.

Installation

  1. Locate the gas inlet on the welding machine. This is typically a threaded or quick-connect fitting designed for gas input.

  2. Attach one end of the gas hose to the gas inlet on the welding machine. Use appropriate gas hose fittings to ensure a secure and leak-free connection
  3. Connect the other end of the gas hose to the inlet port of the gas flowmeter and tighten all connections securely to prevent leaks.
  4. Install the gas flowmeter in a convenient location, typically near the welding machine or on the welding machine trolley. Ensure that the flowmeter is securely mounted and easily accessible for adjustments.
  5. Open the gas cylinder valve and set the appropriate flow rate on the gas flowmeter. The recommended flow rate is often specified based on the welding process, material, and welding wire size.
  6. Once the gas flowmeter is installed, power up the welding machine and confirm that the gas flow is consistent and meets the required specifications.
